A red tide, or harmful algal bloom, is a higher-than-normal concentration of a microscopic alga (plantlike organism). Some people experience respiratory irrigation (coughing, sneezing, etc) when FL red tide is present and winds blow offshore. Swimming is safe for most people; however, red tide can cause some people to suffer skin irritation and burning eyes. Use common sense. Avoid areas with a red tide bloom if you are susceptible to irritation from plant products, thoroughly wash off if you experience irritation and do not swim among dead fish as they can be associated with the harmful bacteria.For current information on red tide, please see the link below.
