2nd Annual Hurricane Awareness Party, Thursday, May 22, 2008 – 7 PM @ Indian Shores Town Hall:
Our first Hurricane Awareness Party last spring attracted over 125 Indian Shores residents, eager to learn the best ways to deal with an impending weather disaster. Based on that success, we have decided to make this an Annual Event. We have once again invited a local meteorologist, Tom Iovino from Pinellas County, Chief Rick Walker from Pinellas Suncoast Fire and Rescue and Chief E.D. Williams from our own Police Department. Every resident will receive a gift from the Town and there will be a raffle for some storm preparedness related supplies. Food and beverages will follow the meeting. Last year’s Hurricane Awareness Party drew raves from the attendees so be sure you put this important date on your calendar. Hope to see you there.
Town Memorial Day Picnic: – The Town’s annual Memorial Day Picnic will be held on Monday, May 26th from 1 pm to 4 pm in Estelle Harper Park, behind the Town Hall. All citizens are welcome to attend. Come meet and be served by your Town Council members, soak up the sunshine and enjoy a free picnic lunch, compliments of the Town. There will be professional entertainment and a short Memorial Day Program honoring those who have served.
Memorial Day Book Sale: The book sale will be held in conjunction with the Town Picnic on May 26th. We'll have great deals in old and new books, with commemorative book marks to accompany sales. Spring and summer is an ideal time to become a volunteer. Business is slow with lots of time to hone your skills on library computer procedures. You'll be rewarded with a Mayor's reception, a volunteer appreciation dinner, and a recognition award. Most of all you'll meet some of the nicest people in town: those who love to read. For more information, contact Alice Lawrence, 595-2173, or Dottie Strahlendorf, 593-9608.
FYI: Installation of the Reclaimed Water Main and Reconstruction of Gulf Blvd.: Gulf Boulevard within the Town of Indian Shores is a State Highway. Agreements have been made between Pinellas County Utilities and the Florida Department of Transportation to allow Pinellas County to construct the Reclaimed Water Transmission Main, make other water and sewer improvements, and then resurface the road and provide a new asphalt surface, bike lane and sidewalks on both sides of the two-lane road. One-way flagging is being conducted and can be expected to continue for several months. Temporary two-way traffic has been constructed in the narrows section of Indian Shores where the seawall in that area is being repaired. For details about the road project, go to http://www.pinellascounty.org/gulfblvd. In case of water or sewer utility problems, call one of the following numbers: Hotline: 464-4000. After Hours: 464-4273.
POST DISASTER TOWN RE-ENTRY TAG PROGRAM: In preparation for the Hurricane Season which begins June 1, 2008, Indian Shores developed a user friendly post-disaster program to expedite your re-entry across the bridges when the authorities clear the beaches for occupancy. Currently, County Sheriff procedures require the checking of identification of all who return to the beach. As this is a very slow process, those returning may encounter extensive delays.
To speed up that re-entry over the Walsingham and Park Blvd. Bridges after a major storm or other disaster, we created a program using rear view mirror mounted Re-Entry ID tags, colored tan to identify you as an Indian Shores resident. These tags are available to owners and residents and are issued free of charge at Town Hall. They are numbered and a log is kept of the tags issued. Reported lost or stolen tags will be blacklisted. If you were issued a tag last year, you do not need to re-apply; however, we ask that you update any relevant information which has changed.
When the Sheriff’s Department deems it safe to re-enter the barrier islands, those holding re-entry tags must hang them from the rear-view mirror and the law enforcement officer will know that their ID’s have been checked beforehand. If practical, a separate lane will be created for residents with these tags. Re-entry will be expedited because law enforcement will not have to stop every car going through the checkpoint. Keep in mind, the Sheriff’s Department reserves the right to ask for additional identification at any time. The hang tags also act as a security system for police patrols after re-entry because vehicles belonging in town will be easily distinguishable from those that may not belong here. This also helps patrols in preventing looting and vandalism.
Businesses in town can apply for enough tags to cover their emergency staff. The business manager could retain the re-entry tags and issue them to employees when an evacuation is called. The employees should return the tag after the emergency. When the permit application is completed, the business owner may complete one form and provide a list of employee names, which must be updated annually.
Check with the front office staff (595-4020, ext. 0) if you have any questions or call me at 595-4020, ext. 27. Let’s hope we will never have to use them!
