Mayor Lawrence
Mayor Jim Lawrence

Mayor Jim Lawrence retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1993. He was a Command Pilot with over 6,500 flying hours and served as a pilot in every U.S. conflict from Vietnam to Gulf War I.

Jim and his wife, Alice Fennell-Lawrence, also a retired U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, settled in Florida in March of 1993 and have been residents of Indian Shores since July, 1993. He has one adult son, Scott, who resides in Charlotte, North Carolina with his wife Jennifer and beautiful daughter Cassidy Jade, born on April 28, 2009. Mayor Lawrence’s best friend is Molly, his pet Schnauzer.

He has served on the Indian Shores Town Council since March of 1998, chairing the Public Services Committee for two years and chairing the Planning, Zoning and Building Committee for five years. Jim was Vice Mayor for five of his eight years as a Town Councilor. He also served three years on the Board of Directors of the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority, the last two as Treasurer and Vice Chairman and represented Indian Shores on the North Beaches YMCA Board of Directors from its inception in 2003 until its dissolution in 2007. From 2005-2007 he was the Chairman of the NBYMCA Advisory Board.

Jim assumed the position of Mayor in March, 2006 after running unopposed for that position and was re-elected without opposition in 2009. He has served as the President of the Barrier Islands Governmental Council from March 2008 to the present.

Vice Mayor Joan Herndon

Vice Mayor Herndon has been a vital part of the Indian Shores community for over 20 years. Before running for Council she was active in the Indian Shores Property Owner’s Association, was a volunteer in the Town Library and served on various Town Committees.

Joan is a native Floridian, born and raised in the Tampa Bay area. As a life-long learner, she has spent 34 years as an educator; with an additional decade of public service as an elected official.

Today, in addition to serving as Vice Mayor, she is Chairman of the Public Services Committee, Chairman of the Ad Hoc Beautification Committee and Chairman of the Recreation Committee.

Councilor Steve Sutch

Steve attended Robert Morris Junior College and Duquesne University majoring in Business Administration.  He and his wife moved to Indian Shores in December 1994 after retiring from the H.J. Heinz Company where he worked for 35 years ending up as a Senior Manager responsible for overseeing 7 distribution centers and 4 factory transportation and warehousing operations.
 
Steve had been a Board Member of the Property Owners serving as President, Secretary and Treasurer.  He was appointed to the Indian Shores Council filling a seat vacated by Sandra Shuler.  A perpetual volunteer and hard worker for many Town parties and various activities.

Councilor Bill Smith

Councilor Bill Smith is a native of Michigan, having moved to Florida in 1983. Bill holds B.A. and M.B.A. degrees from the University of Michigan, where--while majoring in economics, finance and accounting--he was a 4-year member of the Michigan Marching Band. Upon graduation Bill began his career with I.B.M in Detroit as an account representative to the automotive industry, followed by several years in information systems management and then several more years as an Information Technology consultant. Bill’s company, S/3 Consulting Group, now specializes in accounting and consulting services to condominium and homeowner associations in Indian Shores and neighboring barrier island communities.

Bill and his wife Marcie moved to Indian Shores in 1996. Following the resignation of an Indian Shores Town Councilor, Bill was appointed to the Town Council in August 2001. He was reelected unopposed to the Town Council in 2002, 2004, 2007, and 2010.

Prior to his election to the Town Council, Bill was active with the Indian Shores Property Owners Association and served on a committee of the Barrier Islands Government Council (BIG-C) that dealt with the State’s attempt to relocate the Coastal Construction Control Line (CCCL) in Pinellas County. Later as a member of the Town Council Bill served as the Town’s representative on the Oversight committee reviewing the financial affairs of the Pinellas Suncoast Fire & Rescue District. In 2008, he became chairman of the town’s Planning, Zoning and Building (PZB) Committee. In 2009 Bill was named to represent the BIG-C as a director of the Florida Shore and Beach Preservation Association (FSBPA), and a member of a new BIG-C committee opposing Offshore Drilling in State of Florida coastal waters.

Councilor Carole Irelan

Carole moved to Florida from Pittsburgh, PA in 1987 and into her home in Indian Shores in 1998. She worked for Sears as the Roofing Supervisor for multi-state installations and then locally as Office Manager/Bookkeeper for a roofing company until her retirement in 2004.

Carole has served on the Indian Shores Library Board and currently orders the books, keeping up with the latest best sellers. She also served on the Indian Shores Property Owners board before being elected. Carole served for three years as the treasurer of Golden Shores Condominium. Prior to serving on council Carole rarely missed a council, workshop or committee meeting for three years. She served on three Indian Shores committees as a citizen member – BOAA, Public Service and the Recreation Ad Hoc committee.

Carole now serves on Public Service, Admin & Finance, Recreation Ad Hoc and Beautification Ad Hoc committees. She also finds time to be the Town alternate representative for the Suncoast League of Cities.

On a personal note Carole is a widow with 2 sons. One lives nearby in Seminole and the other is employed in Sydney Australia. Her hobbies are reading, puzzles, computers and cross-stitch. Carole’s wonderful companions are Scooter and Sassy – 2 cats that run the house.
