[ARCHIVED] Why Sand Sifting is Important - A Message from our Emergency Management Team

The hurricanes left behind debris mixed with sand, creating a public safety concern. Please read on for details.

To address this, we’ve initiated this state-approved mission in partnership with the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) and LTS Disaster Response. Similar operations are currently being conducted in nearby communities, including Redington Shores and Belleair Beach.

Details of the Operation

  • Current Work Area:  The sand sifting machine is actively working south of 193rd Avenue.
  • Process:  Debris-contaminated sand is removed from areas approximately three blocks to the north and transported to a designated pile. Once cleaned, the sand is returned to the beach, where it is leveled—not formed into dunes.
  • Progression:  The operation will continue to move north as the cleaning progresses, ensuring a thorough restoration of the entire beach.

Public Concerns
We understand that these operations may temporarily affect the aesthetics or accessibility of certain areas. However, these efforts are critical for ensuring the safety of all beachgoers by removing sharp debris and hazardous materials. While temporary inconveniences may arise, the long-term benefits of clean, safe beaches outweigh these challenges.

Timeline
We anticipate that the sand sifting operations will continue through mid-January. Updates on progress will be shared regularly.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to restore and improve our beaches.
